Apnea is a term that sometimes gets thrown around lightly when we sleep next to a snorer. Obstructive Sleep Apnea is no joking matter though. The term apnea translated from Greek literally means ‘no breath’ or ‘without breath’. It is a fitting name to the condition as it actually causes the sleeps airway to complete close letting no air get through during sleep.

As the condition occurs during sleep many sufferers are unaware that they even have a problem. The sleeper will awake suddenly during the night often gasping for air, and seldom remembering the break in their sleep. When the airway is blocked and breathing is stopped for 10 seconds or more the person is said to have Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

Sleeping with a snorer can be a stressful experience but Sleep Apnea can lead to more than just broken sleep and strained relationships. The repeated lack of air during the night actually damages brain cells and increases the risk of stroke and heart problems. The resulting broken sleep is often unrestful leaving the sufferer tired and with difficulty concentrating effecting their work and social habits.

If you think that the snorer in your bed may suffer from more than a noisy night sleep, don’t feel embarrassed to tell them and have them book a consultation with Dr. Schachter. Dr. Schachter will assess their condition and likely refer them to a sleep clinic where they can be properly diagnosed. There are several successful treatments available to Obstructive Sleep Apnea sufferers that will improve both their sleep as well as yours.
